Firstly, of course, congratulations to the great team that went on tour to represent Tinahely on the National Play Festival Circuit and made it all the way to the All-Ireland final. When Damien/Tara/Pat made fourth place in the All-Ireland, with The Typist, it was already a great achievement for those Tinahely Variety Group people and the Variety Group of a small town like Tinahely. Since those glory days, we have had quite a few more successes and many individual awards to be proud of and celebrate. Still, in national terms, nothing quite like that happened again.

Until – as Galway Girl started to gather awards round the festival circuit last year, we all started to hope – perhaps another All-Ireland? And it happened. And another fourth place in that jealously sought and fought competition. Dozens and dozens of theatre groups all over Ireland tried. Only 10 made it, and we were one of them – again.

Now it must be said that, much as I like the team effort that carries all TVG activities, this was very much the work of 6 individuals. It is difficult to separate their importance because it was a team effort. Oh – sorry to contradict myself. I shall mention this team in alphabetical order of surnames. Deirdre Dalton (backstage), Noel Dalton (director), Thomas Dalton (backstage), Anne Hickey (onstage), Tony Hickey (onstage) and Jill Massey (backstage). Without any of these people it might not have happened.

FOURTH PLACE IN THE WHOLE OF IRELAND – AGAIN

Well done all associated and especially all those named above.

Where now?

The first thing on our agenda is to continue the success of our part in the annual Tinahely Walking Weekend. With that in mind, we are doing two one-act plays next May. We are holding auditions in Murphy’s Hotel on Thursday 3rd February at 8.30.

Perhaps YOU could also achieve a great ambition in one of these plays. Perhaps, like many people in Tinahely, aged between 7 and 70, you have the talent but don’t know it yet. Even Dick Barton managed it so, if you want to know about terror, ask him about his first night on stage. BUT THEN ask him how he felt afterwards in the pub when somebody said “Well done. I enjoyed that”.

Please come along on the 3rd. It will be a fun evening and a play always needs people to work backstage. If you are really keen but can’t make the 3rd, please call or text me on 086 3251337 and we will try to arrange another time. (I’ll call back if busy. I really will.)

More power to the TVG and it’s President for Life – Bree Greene.

Greetings from Sandra – Chairperson
