THE DYING COW – Nestled along the slopes of Stratnakelly, you will find a unique public house. Small in size with a welcome fit for a thousand, the Dying Cow is another of our localities great treasures. Whether it is the infamous “Irish Nights”, that attract hundreds, if not thousands every summer, or the quiet pint during the afternoon, ‘The Cow’ is also unique as a stopping station for the many Wicklow Way hikers who descend from countries across the world. Its history is also unique. It is believed to be over three hundred years old.
How did it get its name? The history of the name, displayed on the welcoming sign outside the premises, details it well. “The name of the pub originated from an incident said to have happened around the 1920s, when a group of people were caught drinking there on a Sunday night.” The story continues that when the police arrived in the early hours, the local men, who were still enjoying a beverage, claimed they were only there to help the Tallon’s with a sick cow, hence the name which has now become famous throughout Wicklow and south Leinster.
